Handsway

Personal Project

Launched: February 2022

Handsway is a one-of-a-kind, completely free(and will always remain free), mobile application that uses machine learning to translate ASL signs to text from your phone camera in real time.

Dream it.

I’ve always been fascinated by sign languages and had a life-long dream to learn them. However, while learning ASL, upon curious investigation I discovered there weren’t any apps that could translate ASL to text in real time. Since 500K+ people rely on ASL just in the US & Canada, I recognized a substantial need to break the communication barrier between them and people who don’t understand ASL.

Build it.

Knowing the importance of something like this, I had to do something about it. However, the most challenging part was to find an extensive public dataset. So, to make this app possible I had asked my friends and family to provide me with videos of them doing ASL. To speed up this process and add variability in my dataset, you can also help hand talk grow faster.
